Ariane Burgess, Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands & Islands has asked the Scottish Government to provide an update on the implementation of the Cost of Living (Tenant Protection) (Scotland) Act 2022.
The Act introduced a temporary freeze on rent increases and bans arbitrary evictions to protect tenants from excessive rent hikes and the risk of losing their homes during the current cost of living crisis.
Speaking after her question, the Scottish Green MSP said: “The Cost of Living Act was a landmark achievement, delivering on a key Scottish Green manifesto commitment to improve tenants’ rights and housing affordability.”
“With market rent levels becoming increasingly unaffordable, and far too many private tenants living under the constant threat of eviction, this legislation provides vital protections for those struggling with the Tory-made cost of living crisis. The Greens will keep pushing for permanent rent controls and to scrap no-fault evictions entirely.”
Ms Burgess also stated that making housing more affordable and secure is crucial to helping people through the ongoing cost crunch and tackling poverty.
“Safe, affordable housing is a human right and foundational to thriving communities. By giving tenants greater security and protection from excessive rent hikes, we can ensure people’s homes are a source of security, not constant stress.”
