The Arran Banner is constantly in awe of the work of volunteers and people who sacrifice their valuable time to help others.
This week we visited the Arran Mountain Rescue Team’s 60th anniversary celebrations and it struck us just how many lives have been saved and how many tragedies averted as a result of the diligent work of its volunteers.
The commitment required from volunteers is huge, the risks great and the work arduous.
Still, these volunteers head out in all weathers, up and down steep and dangerous mountain precipices at the expense of their own personal lives.
Children’s birthdays missed, time spent with loved ones missed – the sacrifices are immense.
When speaking to these volunteers it also dawned on us, the sacrifices run far deeper than the volunteers themselves.
They all praise their understanding husbands, wives, partners and children for allowing them to venture out at unsociable hours to help others.
There is no financial incentive; the brave rescuers say they get their reward by being able to assist those in their weakest hour and the camaraderie with their teammates after a job well done.
