Whiting Bay Golf Club
Monday July 25, Junior Open. Following the deluge that hit the big open over the weekend, numbers participating in the junior equivalent were a little down on last year probably due to people not realising just how resilient the course is.
Monday morning provided kinder weather than expected though and the youngsters that turned up certainly had a fun day.
There was a good spread of ages and as usual the golf was tailored to suit the different age groups.
The winner and 2022 WBGC Junior Open champion is Scott Palin from Old Ranfurly Golf Club at Bridge of Weir.
Playing off a handicap of 23 Scott shot an astonishing level 4s round of 72 from the yellow tees to claim his title.
Thanks go to all who participated and to the adults who acted as guides, caddies, referees etc; without their input this would be a very difficult day to stage.
Thanks also to the course and clubhouse staff who carried on on Monday just as they had left off on Sunday, superb.
Finally another huge vote of thanks to the Adair and Foggo families and to Flora Jean Mack for their generous contribution of time, refreshments and prizes.
The club is once again indebted to them for staging this popular and important event.
Wednesday July 27, Jim Pirie Quaich:
After the wet weather of the weekend 33 players enjoyed their golf in perfect weather conditions on a course in pristine condition, the greens especially so.
The Jim Pirie is now played as a handicap Stableford and Graham Wilks romped home with 41 points to win his first trophy at Whiting Bay: 1 Graham Wilks 24, 41pts, 2 Alan Hill 14, 38 acb, 3 Neil Lucas 13, 38, 4 Liam Bremner 21, 37. Magic two Neil Richardson @4th.
Sunday July 31, Nestor’s Jug. A total of 30 played in this popular Stableford and in contrast to the preceding weekend enjoyed perfect golfing conditions with a breeze that strengthened as the morning progressed.
Scoring was decent with 20 cards returned with 30 points or more but the winning score, from Graham Wilks almost repeating his heroics of the Jim Pirie Quaich, beat par by only one stroke.
Unusually, second place was shared between John Pennycott and David Brookens since, despite applying all the countback rules, their cards could not be separated. 1 Graham Wilks 23, 37pts, 2 David Brookens 14, 36 and John Pennycott 14, 36, 4 Ronnie Mann 16, 35. Magic twos, Gus Macleod @2nd, Stan Rainey @17th.
