A ban on single-use plastics was introduced across Scotland this week, and North Ayrshire Council is encouraging residents to do their own part to help the initiative.

The ban, which came into effect on Wednesday June 1, is set to tackle some of the most problematic and environmentally damaging single-use plastic items in circulation.

Councillor Tony Gurney, cabinet member, economy and climate change, commented: ‘We are proud to support the Scotland-wide ban against the single-use of some of the most harmful, environmentally-damaging plastic products.

‘The legislation is going to go a long way in stamping out the unnecessary use of plastic cutlery, drinks stirrers, polystyrene cups, food containers and more.

‘Since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, North Ayrshire Council has been working closely with residents, community groups, businesses and staff to help them take ownership of the problem and become more ‘plastic smart’. The council is doing this by encouraging everyday reduction of plastic use and the resulting waste and litter associated with it.

‘Council officers will continue to work together to combat the region’s staggering throwaway culture, doing all they can to address the climate emergency and become a Plastic Free Council by the end of 2022.’

Councillor Gurney concluded: ‘I would like to extend my thanks to everyone who has played their part so far, and continue to do so, in helping to drive lasting change so that together, we can take the positive and necessary steps to stamp out single-use plastics once and for all.’
