Science and fun combine at Lamlash during Science Week celebrations

Lamlash Primary School dedicated a day to scientific research and exploration as part of British Science Week.

Primary one to primary six pupils enjoyed experiments and fun activities with underlying scientific principals which helped the children easily absorb the information.


Excitment was at fever pitch for the pupils, who relished a day far removed from regular lessons, as they undertook individual and team tasks. Among them was a challenge to transport bulk supplies of water from one container to another, designing and operating a waterway to transport ducks, evaporation experiments, learning about and designing a poster of the water cycle, as well as investigating wave, solar and wind energy, among others.

Principal teacher at Lamlash Primary School Mrs Lucy Marriott said: ‘Our activities were part of a British Science Week grant we were awarded from The British Science Association.

‘In our drive to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Lamlash Primary School, we choose to set up a day of activities for pupils to explore the water cycle and the importance of water for all of us and the planet.

‘A great day was had by pupils and staff.’


To add an element of excitement for the team tasks, pupils were divided into house colour groups and competed to see who could earn the most points in some of the activities.

Science day culminated in a living representation of the water cycle with pupils divided into groups, some representing the sea, clouds, river and rain drops. All rushed around each other, acting as transpiration, precipitation and evaporation.

The day, while educational, provided the children with many laughs and excitement and will undoubtedly remain in their minds and imaginations for a long time.
