Arran Golfers Association

Friday April 29, Arran Golfers Association (AGA) Senior Bowl round one at Brodick Golf Club: Lochranza Castle beat Shiskine; Lamlash beat Corrie and Machrie Bay beat Whiting Bay.

Sunday May 1, AGA Spring Handicap: to accommodate ongoing work at Machrie Bay Golf Club, the AGA Spring Handicap made an unexpected return to Whiting Bay having last been played there in 2019.

A disappointing field of only 28 players enjoyed the course which had benefited from the persistent rain the previous day after an uncharacteristically dry April. As in 2019, home players dominated the leaderboard with eight of the top 10 places going to Whiting Bay members.

The remaining two in the top 10 each returned cards in the ‘stellar’ category with Craig Young of Balmore Golf Club scoring a scratch 61 and Ewan McKinnon of Corrie Golf Club returning a scratch 62 – fantastic golf by any stretch of the imagination.

Whiting Bay member David Brookens, who was runner up the last time the Spring Handicap was played at Whiting Bay, was the overall winner this time with a net 59 and received the prestigious Guy Spiers Trophy. He also won the JC Reid Cup for the best score by a senior golfer. 1 David Brookens 13, 59; 2 Neil Lucas 12, 61; 3 Craig Young +2, 63 acb and lowest gross; 4 Ewan McKinnon +1, 63. Magic twos: John Quigley @11th, Ewan McKinnon @13th, Craig Young @16th and David Jeffrey, Stewart Mackintosh and David Morrison @17th.

Thanks to Whiting Bay for hosting the event at short notice. Thanks are also due to the club greenkeeper Stuart for the fine condition of the course and to John, Nancy and Kirsty for looking after the players so well in the clubhouse.

Fixtures: Friday May 6, Senior Bowl at Brodick Golf Club, semi finals, Brodick v Lochranza Castle, Lamlash v Machrie Bay.
