A power cut, which was declared a major incident at Crosshouse Hospital, resulted in the last-minute cancellation of appointments across NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

The power failure, in the early hours of Sunday March 6, saw the administrative computer crash, leading to all appointments being cancelled at Ayr, Crosshouse, East Ayrshire, Ayrshire Central and Biggart hospitals for the entire day on Monday, affecting residents on Arran.

Speaking on Monday afternoon, Dr Crawford McGuffie, NHS Ayrshire and Arran medical director, said: ‘We understand that cancellation of today’s outpatient appointments at short notice was disappointing and disruptive for many people and we apologise for any inconvenience caused. Our referral management service is reappointing everyone impacted as swiftly as possible. Patients with any concerns can call the team on 01563 827070.

‘This has been a challenging situation for our staff and patients and my thanks go to everyone for their patience and support.’

Normal service resumed at all the hospitals on Tuesday.
