For King and Country

Twelve young men in high spirits pose for the camera. They are the Arran Volunteers and are on their way to the 1914-1918 war. After joining up they went from Arran to Dunbar for training before being sent to the front. And at least one, we know, did not return. The picture has been handed to us by Jack Murchie of Shiskine. Four of the men have been identified, they are, back row extreme left John Murchie, third and fourth from left respectively JS Bannatyne and Neil Henderson, and back row extreme right George Bannatyne. All of these men are from Shiskine but we do not know the others. The picture has been sent to the Arran Heritage Museum.
