The popular annual spring flower and bulb show will not go ahead this year, the Arran Horticultural Society committee has announced.

The show, which was provisionally scheduled for Saturday March 26, is traditionally held in the Brodick Hall, but organisers have confirmed that it will not go ahead owing to concerns about safeguarding visitors.

Society chairman John Sillars said: ‘It is with much sadness that our committee has decided to cancel this year’s show.

‘We are aware that restrictions relating to Covid are being lifted on the 21st of this month, but we feel many uncertainties will linger.

‘We are particularly concerned of the mix of adults and children on what is traditionally a very busy day with limited numbers to manage the event.’

The society hosts two annual shows, the spring flower and bulb show in March or April, and the summer show in August.

Mr Sillars confirmed that plans for the summer show were still being formulated and he was optimistic about it going ahead.

He said: ‘The venue for the summer show is booked, and plans for that will be being initiated next month.

‘While the children will miss the spring show, we note that the numbers exhibiting in the summer are ever-increasing with the encouragement of parents and teachers.’

The summer schedules, outlining the categories, regulations and prizes, will be ready for July.
