An unlikely ensemble, pairing classical saxophone and a string quartet, will perform at two Arran venues next month as part of their west of Scotland tour.

Known by the name An Atypical Romance, the touring group is made up of the Resol String Quartet and Richard Scholfield on saxophone.

The Resol String Quartet formed in autumn 2018 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has gone on to win first prize in the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Mabel Glover String Quartet competition.

Richard is a 2020 City Music Foundation artist and was recently awarded a distinction in the 2021 Tunbridge Wells International Music competition.

During its visit to Arran, the group will perform new arrangements of music by Sibelius, Webern, Vaughan Williams, Chopin and Grant Still. Each piece tells a different story of love and human connection – whether in passionate romance, platonic devotion or patriotic fervour. These works and the stories they tell will be heard in a new light in the performances, with new, specially-arranged settings for solo saxophone and string quartet.

In addition to the two Arran performances, the group is taking its concert programme to Glasgow, Oban and Islay, alongside educational workshops and performances in schools.

The first of the two Arran performances will take place at Brodick Church on Friday December 10, at 7.30pm, and the second at St Brides Church, Lochranza, the following day at 1pm. Entry at both events will be by donation.
