Those with an interest in the Cheltenham Festival could have got their week off to a flyer if they had followed their Arran instincts and chosen the aptly named horse Shishkin in the first race.
Running in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle on Tuesday, the Nicky Henderson-trained horse had been an early favourite but its price had drifted out to 6-1 by the time of the race’s start, as few gave him a chance on the soft ground.
But jockey Nico de Boinville had other ideas and despite, by his own admission, events conspiring against him in a tremendous final furlong finish, he beat Abacadabras by a nose at the line.
Surely a horse to watch for the future.
