Hard work and dedication has paid off for two Arran students, Janet Bray and Helen How, who are to be jointly awarded the Argyll College UHI Principal’s Award for their outstanding results in National 5 Gaelic.

This college award is given part-time students in recognition of outstanding achievement. Both Arran students, who undertook National 5 Gaelic at Argyll College UHI in Lamlash, achieved upper A’s in their final exam, and were the overall top scoring students from more than 50 others in Argyll College this year. With only one mark separating their results, principal Martin Jones decided that the ladies should share the award.

The Gaelic programme on Arran is delivered through collaboration between Argyll College UHI and NAC’s empowerment and participation team. Gaelic tutor Sheila Blain said: ‘I am delighted that the hard work Janet and Helen put into their Gaelic has been recognised with this award. For a tutor, it is especially rewarding to have such diligent students and, even more, to see them then using their Gaelic in various ways in the wider community. North Ayrshire Council is always keen to find ways to promote and preserve the language and this partnership with Argyll College was an ideal way to achieve accreditation for our students.’

On hearing the news, North Ayrshire councillor Ellen McMaster, said: ‘It is excellent that this collaborative delivery has undoubtedly created a learning environment which has enabled these students to flourish to the best of their potential. I congratulate Helen and Janet for their achievements and hope that these successes encourage more people to take up or continue with learning Gaelic, they will have much to aspire to and the best of learning environments to do it in.’

Janet and Helen will be presented with their awards at the College’s annual graduation and prizegiving ceremony in Oban later this month.
