Both participants and supporters felt the heat at the annual primary school swimming gala held at the Auchrannie hotel pool last week.

While supporters in the pool area  were feeling the high temperatures, in the pool it was the high level of competition that sent temperatures soaring.

The annual event, which attracts a large number of spectators, took place under the watchful eye of race supervisor and starter Sally Hunter with assistance from head teacher Barry Smith, Julie McGhee and teachers from the various schools.

Archie McNicol, who has helped organise the event for over five years, also volunteered his time to return to Arran to assist once more. Joining him was Eilidh Hamill and Linda Johnston of Auchrannie, who recorded the results and handed out the medals and trophies.

A highlight of the event, and one that saw the audience enthusiastically shouting their encouragement, is the champions race which, this year, was won by Jack Popplewell in the boys’ event and Ruby Wright in the girls’ final.
