Big Davy Ballantyne was this this week reunited with the anvil which he dragged up Goatfell.

The anvil now has pride of place in the garden of the Douglas Hotel in Brodick overlooking Arran’s most famous mountain where it will be used for wedding photographs, but it is already proving a popular picture spot.

It is three years since Davy, who now works at the new Lagg Distillery, dragged the 120 kilogram anvil to the 874 metre summit of Goatfell to raise money for diabetic research.

He came up with the challenge, after his daughter Roisin was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, aiming to raise £3,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. In the end, after worldwide publicity, Davy raised an astonishing £19,000 by the Herculean feat which took him 26 days – completing the final stretch on Sunday  5 June 2016.

Afterwards there was a debate over whether the anvil should stay permanently at the top of Goatfell, but eventually it was decided it should be removed with Davy dragging the anvil back down from the top with a little help from friends.

A new home was found for it when the Douglas Hotel stepped in with a generous donation to the charity and the anvil was handed over, initially being used inside the hotel, until finding its new permanent home on a plinth in the hotel gardens with a plaque recognising Davy’s acheivement.

Davy said: ‘I’m delighted to see the anvil in such an ideal spot with Goatfell behind it. It is already three years ago but it is something I will never forget.’

Last year Davy took on a new challenge walking up Ben Nevis wearing 60kg of chains in day, but had to stop just 300m from the summit due to dangerous weather conditions. He still managed to raise more than £3,000 for the JDRF charity.
