Killie Athletic 2 Arran AFC 3
Q & L Skip Division One
Arran players put in a great performance against Killie Athletic at Grange Academy, Kilmarnock at the weekend with the defenders and goalkeeper playing a large part in the victory.
Having lost the chance to stay in the title race after being beaten by Kilbrinie Utd the week previously, Arran were only playing for pride.
But the visitors took an early lead with a well taken finish from Grant Adamson while Dave Heenan was performing some heroic saves at the other end to keep the Arran side in front. Killie managed to break through the deadlock and were awarded a penalty when their striker was brought down. They scored the resulting penalty and the both sides were sitting evenly at 1-1 at half time.
Killie then secured a second goal in the second half to take the scoreline to 2-1 but Arran battled back and were rewarded when Joel Small leapt to score a fantastic header from the edge of the six yard box. Arran then edged ahead again to bring the score to 3-2 after a well struck volley from Ryan Armstrong took a deflection and ended up in the top corner.
The Arran side managed to maintain their lead with the defence players Martin Hynes and Gavin Gilbert denying the Killie side any chance of scoring. This coupled with the usual hard work of Nick Emsley – who was running everything down in the midfield – prevented Killie from equalising.
The performance of the Arran players allowed for many deserving candidates for man of the match but it was the goalkeeper Dave Heenan who was awarded the title for his numerous saves, including an outstanding double save.
