Arran Malt Rugby Sevens final

Ardrossan RFC 21 Irvine RFC 24

Irvine were the narrow winners of Arran Malt Rugby Sevens competition held at the Omidale Park in Brodick last Saturday.

The faced near rivals Ardrossan in the final with both sides reaching the end of the tournament unbeaten and in a close contest Irvine just edged the win.

The sun shone and the crowds came out to enjoy a feast of rugby at the sevens, back this year after a year’s absence.  Six teams took part in the competition with Arran joined by teams from Strathaven, Glasgow Accies, and Bishopton as well as the two finalists.

There was lots of fast flowing rugby during the afternoon as the crowd soaked up the atmosphere as well as drinks from the beer tent which did a roaring trade.

However, the day was not without its off pitch drama. Two Arran players – Robbie Bain and Scott Currie – had to be taken to hospital and a Glasgow Accies player had to be airlifted to hospital with concussion with the air ambulance landing on the pitch, delaying the action for more than half an hour.

Arran did not fare too well in the tournament losing all their matches, but without a league side or regularly playing competitive matches this is hardly surprising.

What was promising was that Arran’s under 16 side played two exhibition matches against Ardrossan under 16s and won both handsomely, which bodes well for the future of rugby on Arran.
