The formation of a schools pipe band on Arran should be music to the ears of everyone.

And hats off must go to everyone involved in the Isle of Arran Music School for making this happen – not least of all James O’Neil. But he is the last person to take the credit for the huge amount of work and commitment that has gone into creating the school and the pipe band.

Add to that the fact that music school committee has raised the money to buy all the pipes and drums and give all the children free music tuition. At a time when school music lessons across the country are under serious threat owing to budget cuts, that is welcome news indeed.

The collaboration with the Arran Pipe Band is also extremely important giving further encouragement to the youngsters to ‘graduate’ to the senior band.

We wish the schools pipe band every success at their competition this weekend, but this is just the start of what is likely to be a long and fruitful collaboration with the music school which, we predict, will also go from strength to strength.
