The proposals for a new 18 hole golf course at Machrie is exciting news indeed.

The plans may be at an early stage, but clearly a lot of investigation work has already taken place. And to have a top golf course designer in Ian Woosnam involved just ups the ante.

Clearly Dougarie Estate have been considering this for a long time and since they have 27,000 acres at their disposal it is little wonder that the sporting estate is looking at how it can diversfy its income.

A prestigious links course on the island could do wonders for golfing tourism. Golfers already pour over to the island to play the island’s seven courses but a development, such as the one on the drawing board, could take this taken to a whole new level.

Of course there are environmental considerations. There is a special protection area right next to the planned course, but the course designers say they have already spoken to the relevant authorities are this will be closely assessed. There is also the visual impact the course would have, but again, the designers say this would be sympathetic to the landscape.

There may be a long way to go but clearly this is one to watch.
