A nine metre smart-metering radio mast has been given the go-ahead in Lamlash, despite an objection from the Arran Community Council who described the location as unsuitable.

The installation of the mast, which will allow for communications between energy suppliers and households, is the second location selected by applicant Arqiva Ltd who were previously denied planning permission at a site at Arranton Place.

However, the planning department at North Ayrshire Council said full planning approval was not required and that the installation, which is part of the national Smart Metering rollout programme, can proceed under the Permitted Development regulations.

In addition to supporting statements, approved drawings and technical justifications, agents Arqiva Ltd also added that the proposal was the last opportunity to include Lamlash within the national Government programme to give metering coverage to the area.

In their objection to the proposal Arran Community Council said the application at the revised location was ‘equally unsuitable’.

‘Like the original application the proposed site is on the A841, which is the main road into and out of the village on its northern edge. The mast will be visible to both residents and tourists alike and as such we take the view that it’s not in keeping with the location and natural environment.

‘We would again respectfully suggest that the application is located in a less obvious position.’

In total, five neighbour notifications were issued to properties within 20 metres of the site boundary, and two objections were received by the planning department. The application was approved with no conditions being imposed.
