This year’s expanded Brodick beach barbecue certainly brought out the crowds who packed the beach last Sunday on a dry and sometimes sunny afternoon.

Being held for the first time was a 2.2 mile beach run while those preferring the burger and beer tent enjoyed both traditional music, from Alastair and Mungo Paul, and rock music from Brown Noise in an open top trailer. The Arran Junior Fiddle Group and Colin Guthrie joined in the fun.

Fifteen runners took part in the inaugural beach run which was won by Tom Nichol from Lamlash in a time of 14m 53s. The women’s winner was Sarah Stoneham from Buckinghamshire in 20m 29s. There were also children’s races held during the afternoon.

Organised to raise funds by the Brodick  Improvements Committee, there was a terrific entry into the sandcastle building competition and the beach volleyball, putting and frisbee golf competitions were all keenly contested.

But the best was saved to last with the famed beach barbecue raffle which saw many going home happy and others happy to have made a donation to the committee coffers.
