Arran Motocross Club recently hosted their third annual fun weekend at Southbank farm track.
The fundraising weekend was held over two days, consisting of a practice session on the Saturday and then 4 classes of races on the Sunday. Riders from the island and the mainland lined up against each other to put their skills to the test.
The first into action were the A class in which local boy Sam Rayner got the hole shot to pull out a comfortable lead. Battling it out for second were Neil Faulkner of Shiskine and John Bennett of Kirkintilloch, with Neil just edging it after swapping positions several times. Fraser Thompson came home in forth after being promoted from the B Class.
In the B races Mark ‘Deeps’ Dempsy of Glasgow came out on top after battling with Scott Rankin of Shiskine, Matthew Tetlow – a former islander who now lives in the North of England – and John Lamont of Beith. This class saw most of the crashes as John Lamont found himself face down in the dirt on the wrong side of his Honda CR250 on several occasions – much to the enjoyment of his spectating wife Fiona. This performance also saw him collect the ‘Donkey of the day’ trophy.
The C class was dominated by youth rider Thomas Gilmore who gave his father Tom, Murray Boal and newcomer Eddie McMeechan a lesson in how to ride motocross.
In the junior bike section Alfie Gilmore of Brodick battled it out over three races with Owen Bennett of Kirkintilloch and Gill McMeechan of lamlash. The juniors showed grit and determination putting on an impressive display for the Spectators.
The MC Club would like to thank all the spectators who came along to support the club and would like to give an extended thanks to The Lighthouse Tearoom, The Arran Butcher, Wooleys Bakery and the Ormidale Hotel for their contributions towards the barbecue.
They would also like to thank Lenny Hartley, Andrew Surridge and David Prescott for coming down and taking some amazing photographs but the biggest thanks and appreciation has to go to Geoff Brookes, as without his generosity and allowing them to use his land, they wouldn’t have a club at all.
The MX Club is always looking for new members regardless of previous experience, please contact the club on its facebook page for advice.
