Great to see the spirit of community is alive and well on Arran.

For the village associations to rally to save the floral tubs is to be commended. Just look around your village these tubs are a really nice colourful display and it would have been a shame to lose them.

We are a holiday island after all but these displays brighten up the villages for everyone. However,  it will be up to volunteers to put their time and effort to keep them that way, as well as dipping into community coffers to pay for them – although it is good to see the Arran Trust helping as well.

North Ayrshire Council, having halved their planting out budget, simply said fill them yourselves or we will take them away, and we have no doubt they will do just that if they are not now maintained.

It is, of course, not the first time that communities have had to rally to the cause – first to save the public toilets and then the play parks – even the elderly in our sheltered housing units are feeling the pinch.

The worrying question is where will it end?
