Uddingston Ladies 2s 7 Arran Ladies 2
Arran Ladies travelled to Uddingston with a squad of 13 players knowing that it would be a challenging match – taking on an undefeated Uddingston on their home turf. And while the game ended in a defeat for the Arran Ladies good defensive play prevented a rout, with the opposition only managing to score once in the second half.
Arran won the pass back but very quickly found themselves in trouble. The new pitch bounced the ball like a tennis ball instead of a hockey one, which lost the Arran Ladies many passes. Uddingston however moved the ball well and secured numerous short corners. Arran’s defence was scattered and unable to feed the ball beyond the midfield line to the forwards.
Arran resorted to playing a heavily defensive game with the forwards having to drop back in support. Uddingston, whose coach was on the sidelines moving his team players like a chess master, scored six goals but, undeterred, in the last minutes of the first half, a desperate push forward from the Arran forwards resulted in a short corner, with Mia Walker delivering a well executed reverse stick sweep into the Uddingston goal.
This lifted the spirits of the Arran players and in the second half Arran secured another goal fired in by Captain Anne Watts. Uddingston also only second once in the second half to make the final score was 7-2 to the home side.
Uddingston awarded vice captain Lorraine Hewie dame of the game. Arran Ladies would like to thank Niall Sturrock and Grace Mulholland from the Western Wildcats hockey club for umpiring the game.
The next fixture for the Arran Ladies will be against Stepps today (Saturday) at the Ormidale astroturf, all support is welcome and very much appreciated. Check club Facebook page for pass back time.
