Who doesn’t love an advent calendar at Christmas? Maybe it’s largely about childhood memories by opening doors on the countdown to the big day.

Then you were lucky to get a picture of a robin, now its at least got to be chocolate or Star Wars toys, or lego or jewellery or even perfume.

But whatever you are going to open this year – do spare a thought for the reverse advent calendar campaign and think about giving something back in the run up to Christmas.

At the Banner, we thought we had heard about just every way there was to raise charity cash, but this is a new one on us. The idea is that instead of getting a gift on the days of advent – you give something away. It doesn’t have to be much, a tin of soup, a packet of biscuits, a Christmas selection box, but over a month they all add up.

And all the boxes of supplies collected by the very dedicated teams at Arran CVS and the foodbank, run by Arran Churches Together, could make a very really difference to less well off families on Arran this Christmas.
