Ferguslie Ladies 2 Arran Ladies 3

Arran Ladies boarded the ferry on Saturday morning for the short journey to Linwood, travelling light with only 10 players they faced Ferguslie Ladies who have recently been demoted from the West District division two. Arran knew the game ahead was going to be tough and it certainly was exactly that.

The match began at a fast pace and Ferguslie quickly capitalised on the depleted Arran squad by finding the back of the net in the first two minutes. Arran quickly regrouped and put the opposition defence to the test, and after numerous penalty corners, Arran equalised 20 minutes later with a beautiful reverse stick flick from forward Lorraine.

Shortly after the equalizer Arran’s prayers were answered when ‘Lofty’,  having changed all her plans at the last minute, took up the right wing position to take Arran back to full strength.

The half time whistle could not come fast enough, but not before goalie Ali made a great clearance when the Ferguslie centre forward broke through the defence and headed for the circle, Ali sprinted off her line, no easy task in full goalie kit, to meet her at the top of the D, kicking the ball clean out the park. This left both teams going in level at half time.

The second half began with Arran’s defence soaking up a lot of pressure, but within 10 minutes Ferguslie managed to take the lead once again, two shots being cleared by Ali with the third rebound picked up with a super reverse stick flick finding its way past the goalkeeper.

Both sides were evenly matched, but it was Arran’s pure grit, determination and team spirit which was to separate the teams. Arran’s equaliser came from defence, Mia, Cat, Faith and Ellie working solidly together when they got the ball to midfield where Lorraine pressed into the circle, a quick pass to Anne and she flicked it past the goalie.

Arran had Ferguslie on the back foot and quickly found the winning goal, Jenny, Kirsty and Susie worked tirelessly in midfield and it was from there that Anne picked up a through-ball, shimmied past two players then hammered the ball into the back of the net from the top D givng the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Arran had most of the play in the remaining minutes with Anne, ‘Lofty’ and Lorraine applying plenty of pressure but Ferguslie’s defence was very strong, which Lorraine found out to her peril. With only the goalie to beat, Arran thought another goal was on the cards until the goalie launched herself on top of the ball, but Lorraine who was soon back on her feet.

Ellie also received a fat lip from a Ferguslie stick while defending a penalty corner so while a battered and bruised Arran returned home, at least they were still smiling.

The Arran Ladies will enjoy a home game today (Saturday) when they take on Irvine at the Ormidale astroturf with a 2.30pm pass back. Spectators and supporters are most welcome.
