Wednesday August 2, The Betty Black Cup. Another unsettled day saw the popular strokeplay effectively restricted to a morning and afternoon only competition and a field of 24. Heavy rain arriving by mid afternoon made conditions very unpleasant for those contemplating an evening game and none were so desperate as to try. Despite finishing as the rain settled in, Gavin Bell managed to consolidate a fine front 9 (level 4s) on the back 9, to win with a very impressive nett 58. 1 Gavin Bell 26, 58, 2 Alan Kay 19, 61, 3 Murray Foggo 7, 62, 4 Stan Rainey 11, 63. CSS stayed at 63 and Alan Foggo’s gross 67 was the best of the day. Magic twos Stan Rainey @2nd, Murray Foggo @4th and John Dick @17th.
Friday August 4, Ladies Rosebowl Stableford, 8 played. Played off the red tees, CSS went out to 67, 33 points and in a closely fought round, Jean Davidson won narrowly on 30 points. 1 Jean Davidson 24, 30pts, 2 Beth Paterson 8, 29pts, 3 Christine McLeod 23, 27pts.
Sunday August 6, The Lifeboat Competition. The last of the charity support opens for this year was beset by a pessimistic weather forecast that turned out to be disappointingly accurate. Heavy rain arriving late in the morning drove many of those who had started mid morning back to the warmth of the clubhouse and of the 15 who played, only five managed to complete the round, the final two in wetsuits and flippers and a semi submersible buggy. Early starter John Dick made the most of his weather window to win with a nett 64. 1 John Dick 14, 64 and lowest gross, 2 David Brookens 11, 68, 3 John Pennycott 13, 69, 4 Ronnie Mann 13, 72. CSS went out to its maximum of 66 and there were Magic twos from Alan Foggo at the 4th and from Stan Rainey at the 17th. Organisers thanked regular visitors from Carlisle, the Friars Tavern Golfing Society, who visit every year and whom always make a healthy donation to the lifeboat. They also generously sponsored nearest the hole at the 4th and the 17th – won by Alan Foggo and Stan Rainey respectively.

Ladies section: Monday July 10, Club Championship. This year the final took place between Yvonne Brothers, the holder, and Sheena Murchie, who has won the championship on several occasions. The match was held in the evening in dry, breezy conditions preventing the threat of midge attack from materialising. Both ladies started well with Sheena taking an early lead with a 3 at the 2nd which was consolidated with a 3 at the 4th. Yvonne replied with a 3 at the 5th. Further gains from Sheena took her to 3 up at the turn. Honours were even in the second half with a 4 for Yvonne at the 11th, 3s for Sheena at the 13th and 16th and a 3 for Yvonne at the 15th. Over all this was a close contest played at a high standard with putting at a premium. Sheena was a worthy winner by 3 and 2.
