Whiting Bay Golf Club

Wednesday July 19, The McLintock Cup. A field of 28 contested one of the oldest and most revered trophies and once again a very pessimistic weather forecast was found to be wide of the mark. The morning and afternoon players enjoyed benign conditions although the evening players had a wet time of it. Scoring at the top of the leaderboard was good and even a birdie finish by David Brookens couldn’t prevent club captain Wolfi Kroner lifting the cup with a splendid nett 59. 1 Wolfi Kroner 15, 59, 2 David Brookens 11, 60, 3 Frazer Barr 9, 61, 4 Andrew Mack 14, 63. Danny Head had the lowest gross score with a 69, CSS stayed at 63 and magic twos went to Nicol Auld and Alan Hill @16th and David Brookens @17th. Saturday and Sunday July 22 and 23, The Armitage Groundworks Whiting Bay Gents Open. The 2017 Open, Whiting Bay’s flagship event, got off to a fine start on Saturday with a good field enjoying fine weather, until late afternoon at least, and a golf course in the peak of condition. The good fortune continued on Sunday when, after Saturday’s evening rain, the weather remained fine. The whole event went well and a huge vote of thanks is due to Stewart and James for the condition of the course; many visiting players said the greens were the best they had played on this year. Thanks also to John and the clubhouse staff – Nancy, Jamie, Jamie the Train and Louise for catering so well to the needs of so many hungry and thirsty golfers. The smell of burgers grilling on the outdoor barbecue proved a real incentive to a brisk pace of play on the last five holes. Finally a big thank you to the main sponsors, Armitage Groundworks for their generous and continuing support and also to the many members, friends and supporters who donated prizes for the event. Saturday July 22, The Bank of Scotland Cup, 86 played and with fast tricky greens and a changeable breeze, conditions were far from easy, especially for those playing later in the day when heavy rain was added to the mix. CSS went out to 65, (66 reductions only for visiting golfers) and places were decided on a countback after three players, all in the second division, returned nett 63s. 1 Allan Macleod 12, 63 ACB, 2 Kevin McAleney 12, 63 ACB, 3 Alan Hill 15, 63, 4 Jack Adair 16, 64. Scott Adair carded the lowest gross score of 70. Magic twos came from Sandy Pringle at 2nd hole, Ryan Armstrong @11th and Jamie Ainsworth @17th. Sunday July 23, The Royal Bank of Scotland Cup. 92 players took advantage of an optimistic forecast and conditions were considerably easier than they had been on Saturday. CSS stayed at 63 (66 for visitors) and the top four placed players beat that with a couple of shots to spare. 1 Stephen Judge 11, 57, 2 Danny Head 5, 60, 3 Brian Adair 19, 61 ACB, 4 Craig Tart 16, 61. Danny Head’s gross 65 was the lowest of the day and there were no fewer than 10 magic twos, Stephen Judge and Alasdair Kelly @2nd hole, Alan Kay @3rd, Nicol Auld @4th, David Mack and Graeme Mack @7th, Danny Head and Stephen Judge @16th and Scott Adair and Neil Richardson @17th. Sunday July 23, The Armitage Groundworks Whiting Bay Open Trophy for the best 36 hole nett score. 1 Brian Adair 19, 127, 2 Danny Head 5, 128 ACB, 3 Scott Adair 6, 128.
