A group of Arran parents are in the early stages of trying to establish an S1/S2 boys’ football club to play in a league on the mainland.

The group is looking to gauge interest and the availability of coaches and as a initial step they invited Craig Hamilton, a football development officer for the SFA, to the island last week.

Craig was excited about the prospect of a new football team being set up and ran through the minimum requirements that a newly
established club would need to meet to be accepted into the league.

Parents were invited and, with a good turnout, there was a great deal of interest shown by them and the boys.

The league runs from August until May and it is
likely there will be around 10 teams in the league, meaning the boys would have to travel to nine away matches and host nine home matches at Ormidale Park.

Acceptance into the league is not guaranteed, however, as the existing clubs may vote that travelling to Arran is too much of a hassle and reject the application.

The parents of the S1/S2 boys hope this is not the case and have continued in trying to establish if there is anyone living on the island with an interest in being involved in football coaching and prepared to take on the role of head or even assistant coach.

Most of the key requirements can be met by a pool of parents, but the role of head coach is vital and without this the club cannot be established.
Matches on the mainland are played around Ayrshire on a Saturday morning, normally at 10.30am so travel on the 8.20am ferry
would be required.

To be the coach, you do not have to be a parent of a participating boy but you must be over 16 years old. However, other than that stipulation, anyone of any age could take on the role.
