Sheena's contribution to Girl Guiding celebrated
Published:  05 February, 2010

The hard work and dedication of one of Arran’s longest serving Girl Guiding leaders was celebrated at a special surprise party recently.

Sheena Miller from Brodick has been involved with Guiding on Arran for 60 years and she was presented with a certificate at the party commemorating 40 years as a warranted leader.

Sheena, who is now 65, joined the Brodick Brownies when she was five and this has led to a lifetime of involvement with the international Girl Guiding Association.

After moving up to the Girl Guides Sheena became a Young Leader at the age of 17 before eventually becoming a warranted lieutenant.

After a spell as a captain in the Guides she eventually became Brown Owl for the Brodick Brownie pack 12 years ago.

‘It has certainly been a big part of my life,’ said Sheena. ‘But I have loved every minute of it. I’ve worked alongside some of the friendliest people on Arran during that time and it would not have been half as enjoyable without them all.’

One of those that she worked with was former district commissioner Grace Small.

‘I have known Sheena all her life, and our early days in guiding were probably similar; that is - into the Brownies at five, then guides,’ said Grace.

‘I do know that Sheena was born about five months after I had been appointed Brown Owl of the Brodick Pack and as I came out of guiding in 1950 our guiding paths didn’t cross until 1981.

‘During my term as commissioner I saw how well Sheena ran the guides and joined in the fun days when all the island guides got together. I know that Sheena had a hankering to move from guides to Brownies but she had to wait a long time before that happened.’

Sadly Sheena has had to relinquish her role as Brown Owl now that she has turned 65 but she will treasure her memories of 40 years as a guiding leader.

Sheena would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in organising her surprise party.

She said: ‘The buffet was delicious and special thanks must go to Alan Soutter for making such a wonderful cake. But most of all I want to thank my family, especially my husband Ian, who have put up with me all these years. I certainly couldn’t have done any of this without my family.’
