George and Flora take on Brodick filling station

There could soon be a new look to the petrol station in Brodick as George and Flora Lammie of Whiting Bay Garage took it over this week.

The couple have secured a three-year lease on the Arran Transport filling station at the pier and they started on Monday.

‘We’re a bit nervous but we’re looking forward to an extra challenge,’ said Flora who will be managing the new station as well as keeping the garage in Whiting Bay open.

‘We’re not going to be making any huge changes to it yet,’ she said. ‘But we have decided to change the name. It will soon be called Bay Garage (Brodick).’

Flora and George have had Whiting Bay garage for 12 years and from there they have successfully run a filling station, mechanics workshop as well as car and mini-bus hire.

The car hire will be moved to Brodick but the rest of the garage will remain the same.

‘We’re hoping to add a few more things to the shop in Brodick,’ added George. ‘We want customers to come in and find the kind of things they are used to seeing in mainland forecourts.’

The Lammie’s have taken over the lease from Arran Transport owners Bob and Margaret Haddow.

Bob told The Banner that his important commitments overseas in Iraq as well as other development plans afoot on Arran have left them little time to run the filling station.

‘We’re not retiring,’ he said. ‘We’ve got so many projects on the go at the moment that it made sense to lease out the petrol station.’

Bob and Margaret established Arran Transport in 1963 and in that time the business has incorporated buses, haulage services and eventually the filling station and car hire at Brodick.

The couple are still pursuing their plans to build a new filling station with adjoining flats on the site of Ribbeck’s Garage at Glencloy.

‘We’ve got a lot in the pipeline,’ said Bob. ‘We’re extending our home at Kings Cross, building six new holiday cottages; developing three business units in Brodick as well as still trying to build the new filling station at Glencloy. And then after all of this I’m going to sail around the world!’
