Arran Riding Club arranged for Ken Stewart from Protec Training near Dalry to provide trailer handling to new and experienced drivers last Saturday.
Sixteen people took part in various exercises including safety checks and learned new skills to tow trailers securely and confidently on the roads.
They had a classroom session at Arran High School first, followed by practical training in the car park of Arran Provisions. This involved the safe hitching and unhitching of trailers and reversing through cones.
Ken explained: ‘If you sat your car test after 1 Jan 1997 you will not have the ‘E’entitlement on your licence. In simple terms this means you may only tow a trailer up to 750kg behind a car.
‘If you wish to tow anything bigger such as a horse box, plant trailer or some larger caravans, you will need to sit a Driving Standards Agency test for car and trailer (category B+E).’
Riding Club chairperson Janis Murchie said: ‘The day was enjoyed by everyone and the consensus at the end of the session was that it had been a huge success and several of the younger trainees are preparing to book for the training and B + E test through Ken at Protec Training.
Janis added: ‘I would like to thank Charlie MacVicar for the kind use of the car park at Arran Provisions and North Ayrshire Council for providing the traffic cones.’
