After recent heavy frosts, the Machrie Moor road has been reduced to muddy rubble in some places but repairs were due to start yesterday, Friday.
The prolonged spell of cold weather seems to have badly affected the one-mile section of the road between Gate Cottage and Machrie Farm. There are at least 20 large sections where the surface has completely crumbled.
On Tuesday Ronnie Small, NAC head of infrastructure and design, said: ‘Repairs will start on the Machrie Moor road at the end of this week. As a result of the prolonged period of severe weather and constant freezing and thawing, the road network throughout North Ayrshire has suffered substantial damage. Since December, we have had more reports of major damage than we did in the three months between December 2008 and March 2009. We are assessing the damage across the network, dealing with temporary repairs to the roads worst affected and will carry out permanent repairs in order of priority.’
At Tuesday night’s community council meeting chairman Campbell Laing said: ‘I have spoken to Brodie Pearcey about the terrible state of the Machrie Moor road. He is going to approach the council to put a temporary weight restriction on the road.’ Councillor Margie Currie added: ‘I think that will be met with a favourable response.’
