The Isle of Arran Ferry Committee met last Monday night to formulate questions for Gordon Ross, managing director of Western Ferries.
Mr Ross will be attending the next ferry committee meeting on Monday February 8 where he will outline his company’s proposals to introduce a new independent and unsubsidized ferry service to the island in 2011.
Kenneth Gibson MSP will also attend the meeting and he told the Banner: ‘The Ferry Committee’s position (and mine) is that they welcome any proposals to improve the ferry service, making it less expensive, more reliable, of shorter duration and more frequent. Nevertheless, CalMac is held in high regard and the Ferry Committee is concerned that the existing service could be damaged with no discernible improvement.
’Like the Isle of Arran Ferry Committee I have a completely open mind on the proposed additional ferry service to Arran.
’On February 8 Mr Ross will make a detailed presentation to the committee and answer questions put. We will then have a much clearer idea of this proposal, its timetable, viability, likely impact on existing services etc.
’I believe that there should be wide consultation across Arran on Mr Ross’ proposals once we know what they are. This is a vital issue for the people of Arran and islanders deserve to have a say.’
