Arran was the scene for a high profile fashion shoot this week and for four days in July the island was transformed into a winter wonderland.
A team of eight people from Red Magazine spent four days on the island compiling a special Christmas feature for the November edition. Red Magazine is a glossy women’s fashion and lifestyle monthly publication.
Fashion and creative director Nicola Rose said: ‘I have travelled all over the world doing fashion photo shoots and never had such co-operation and help from the locals.’
One of those locals was Derek Shand of Brodick who got dressed in a Santa suit on a hot afternoon. He said: ‘I had a Father Christmas outfit on, riding a motorbike, with an international model on the pillion. Her dress got caught up in the back wheel and it was almost an ‘Isadora Duncan’ moment!’
Nicola and her partner Liam who also works for the magazine have been coming to Arran on holiday for 11 years. She said: ‘We always stay at Kilmichael and the owners, Geoffrey and Antony, are so helpful and were the starting point. I have been wanting to do a shoot here since we first came.
‘Christmas in July seemed like a great idea. Our top photographer William Garratt flew in from Portland, Oregon specially for this.
‘Vanessa Lorenzo is a top fashion model and comes from Barcelona. With her we’ll put together a super 12-page spread selling the beauty of Arran.
‘While we’ve been here the word has spread like wildfire and we have had such a positive reaction. Even ramblers out on the hill have said; ‘Oh, you must be the fashion crew.’
On Tuesday afternoon they were filming in the gardens at Kilmichael. Members of the Arran Pipe Band and other local musicians were playing ceilidh music and children from Corrie primary school were doing Scottish country dancing.

Then Campbell Seaton, local campsite owner and bon viveur, arrived dressed in the kilt and ready to do a Rob Roy act. He gamely led the model, Vanessa, through a series of dance steps while the photographer clicked away.
Producer Beatrice Hurst said: ‘She has never even seen Scottish dancing before but Campbell is great with her. That outfit Vanessa is wearing costs over £3,000 and she will be getting into a ball gown for the next shoot at the hotel driveway gates.’
Head forester Andy Walker supplied a Christmas tree for one of the scenes and Ian Small took a boat up Glen Rosa for some shots afloat in a pool. Local driver Alastair Hendry took them around the island and plied them with background knowledge, and Maurice Deighton and Geoff Brookes were scheduled to take them up to Loch Garbad for a fishing boat scene.
Nicola said: ‘Last July we filmed Nigella Lawson and a snow machine in London for our Christmas edition; this year it seems much more homely to be in Arran.’
Red Magazine is part of a publishing group including Elle and Inside Soap and has a monthly circulation of over 225,000.
