Whiting Bay retained the Hope Cup on Saturday. As 2008 winners, it was the first time since 1936 that they have retained the island’s most prestigious team trophy.

This year’s semi-finals and final day were held on a dry, sunny midge-free day and the golf played was as usual of a very high standard.

First semi final was between hosts Brodick and Lamlash, first game was between Neil Young and Iain Murchie against Derek Roxburgh and Jimmy Armit. Steady golf from both pairings saw the match all square going to the 16th where Neil pitched in off Iain’s drive for a wonderful eagle 2 to go 1 up where they stayed till the match ended at the 18th.

Second match was Dougie Macfarlane and Lee Girbow against Alistair Dobson and Gordon Hendry, a couple of loose tee shots by Lamlash gave Brodick a 3 hole start but the Lamlash boys rallied and got the game back to all square after 11, a great birdie 3 for Brodick at 17 saw the overall match score all square going up the last where a lovely chip by debut boy Lee from an awkward position saw Lamlash sneak a 4 and just edge out the Brodick team by the smallest of margins 1up.

Second semi final was Shiskine and Whiting Bay, and first out were Willie Kelso and Stuart Black against Jamie McPherson and Davy Morrison.

Whiting Bay came out of the traps running and soon went 6 up, the match ending at the 15th with the score still 6 up. Second game was Nicol Auld and Malcolm Pennycott against Joe Faulkner and Jamie Stewart, an up and down game that saw Whiting Bay take an early lead but Shiskine rallied to go 1 up after 9, Nicol and Malcolm stepped up another gear after the turn winning 3 of the next 5 and the game ended at the 14th with the Whiting Bay boys 2 up and the match overall 8 up.

Lamlash were to face last year’s winners, Whiting Bay, in the final.

First game off was Iain and Neil against Nicol and Malcolm, a stunning display of golf from the Whiting Bay lads saw them 6 up fairly quickly and although Neil and Iain got 2 back they lost the next 2 to go back to 6 down where the match stayed till the end. Credit to Nicol and Malcolm who would probably have beaten any pairing as they were well under par when the match ended.

Second off were Dougie and Lee against Jamie and Davy. Lamlash got off to a slow start and went down early on but rallied to square after 9. A great 3 at 13 followed by a stunning pitch in for a 2 by Jamie at 14 saw the boys go 2 up and the match quickly ended after that with the combined score a comfortable 8 up to Whiting Bay.
