At last week’s Isle of Arran Rotary Club meeting, outgoing president Gillian Bussell highlighted the interesting events during her term of office.
In particular, three events were very meaningful for her and the club. Firstly, the support of Arran Rotary for Maggie’s Cancer charity and secondly the visit to the Garden of Cosmic Speculation near Dumfries.
The other main highlight of the year was the excellent performance of the Arran High School public speaking team in reaching the finals of the British Rotary Club competition.
Chris Jenks, Kath O’Donnelly and Iona Flewitt did themselves proud.
Kath was the person to receive the award for being the best chairperson in the whole nationwide competition. Gillian presented shields to the team in recognition of their effort.
As the evening progressed, Gillian handed over her chain of office to Mairi Christie, who as the new president for the forthcoming session thanked Gillian for her work for the club.

Mairi then announced to the members her hopes for the next year.
She hoped that during her term of office the club would enjoy coming to the meetings where fellowship would be of prime importance.
Mairi’s aims for the club are to continue to assist in the Rotary drive to eradicate polio, to put service before self both locally and nationally and to transmit the proper image of Rotary.
Finally, she is determined to seek out talent and use it and get new members who are prepared to commit themselves to these aims.
