Hairdressing is one of the new vocational courses being offered at Arran High School and this week the pupils got to work in their brand new salon.
The six girls in third year are studying for an Intermediate One certificate in hairdressing and they now have a proper salon to work in.
Mrs Paul, the hairdressing teacher, explained that although the core of the class focuses around working in a hair salon, the course is more geared towards general work skills.
‘The girls are learning lots of different skills on the course,’ said Mrs Paul. ‘It is important for them to learn how to conduct themselves in interviews, to know what to do when they go to do work experience, and just generally to have an idea what it is like out there in the working world.’
The salon inside could be mistaken for a proper hairdressers with it’s specialised customised basin for washing hair and three separate areas for styling hair.
Mr Douglas Auld, headmaster of the school, said: ‘When the new school was built we had asked for them to provide us with classrooms for more vocational style teaching.
‘It has taken a while but we have finally had the salon created and it is great for the girls to have a proper area to learn to work in.’
