Lamlash have caused controversy among the football fraternity on Arran by revealing the team’s new green and white strip.
For more than 40 years the team have played in black and white strips but in a move away from tradition the tops are now a dark green colour.
There had been rumblings among some team members that there was more to the green and white strips than meets the eye but all allegations of bias towards a certain old firm team have been denied.
Lee Little was responsible for choosing the new colour. ‘There really is no controversy. I went on to the website of the company that supplies strips. We needed them as soon as possible for the new season. They only had yellow, which is Southend, red which is Shiskine, blue which is Brodick or white which is worn by Northend, so the dark green was just the closest in colour to black that we could get at short notice.’
The new team sponsors are Stevie’s Décor and The Pierhead Tavern in Lamlash.
‘I have heard that the choice of green and white was a little bit controversial,’ said sponsor Stevie Newall of Stevie’s Décor. ‘But I’ve spoken to Lee Little about it – it was him that chose the colours – and apparently it was simply a case of black strips not being available so this was the next best thing.’
According to one Lamlash football fan the team have said the new tops are just their away strips – unfortunately though Lamlash currently don’t have a home ground, so every match is away.
Coach Scott Campbell said: ‘It is a bit strange because Lamlash have always played in black but it’s good to see the boys in new strips because it’s good for moral.’
Long time Arran Football Association chairman, Brian Smith, said: ‘Lamlash have played in black and white as long as I can remember. I suppose it is up to them but I think they should have stayed with tradition.’
Lamlash donned their strips for the first time on Saturday night to play Southend in Whiting Bay.
Despite being defeated 4-0 by the Southenders, the new strips seemed to spur them on and there was some superb play from some of their younger team members.
