Five intrepid men set off from Holy Isle last Tuesday to swim to Arran.
It was the occasion of Graeme Thomson’s 50th birthday and he wanted to celebrate it in an unusual way. Graeme of Torrance in Glasgow has a house in Brodick and has been coming to the island regularly for 17 years.
He said: ‘I wanted to prove that there was life in the old dog yet. My brother-in-law David, nephew Robbie and two friends joined me.
‘We got a ride in Tom Tracey’s RIB boat from Brodick slipway to the lighthouse slip at the south end of Holy Isle. Then we swam across to Kings Cross where our families were waiting for us with a beach barbecue.’
The five had been in training for three months, swimming in open water at Millport, Loch Lomond and Loch Earn. They were piped ashore by Ally Hume and were lucky to escape with just a few jellyfish stings.
