Road to nowhere?
Mixed reaction to latest 'improvements'

Improvement works are currently being carried out at a number of locations on Arran roads.

Inevitably there is some disruption to traffic, but in general the work is being welcomed by drivers. However, some residents have been less than pleased.

Alex Sallows of Lamlash was amazed at the amount of loose chippings left on Brodick Hill after a new surface was laid. He said: ‘I’m really incensed. Even if you obey the advisory 20mph signs, other motorists going too fast in the opposite direction are throwing up loads of sharp stones.

‘The chippings make a mess of cars and the piles of loose chips in the middle of the road are a real hazard for anyone foolhardy enough to try and overtake.’

Ian Small of Brodick has been campaigning against the many potholes on Arran roads for three months. On Tuesday he said: ‘The council have scraped up a 50 metre stretch of road, about two metres wide between Corrie and Sannox. They are in the process of laying about a five centimetre depth of tarmac on loose stones and soil. It seems like money wasted to me, and it just won’t last.’

Another stretch of road at Sliddery has been deemed dangerous by residents. The spot is just south of the Sliddery Water, between Bennicarrigan and Sliddery, where the side of the road has fallen away leaving a drop of about two metres to the field below.

NAC Island Officer Gus MacLeod said: ‘Structure and Design department is dealing with it, and it is in hand. Not only has the roadside fallen away, but there is a wide culvert underneath. A new retaining wall will need to be built and it is a big job. We have requested quotes and as soon as a contractor is appointed it should be done quite quickly.’
