Bomb scare closes Southend road
Published:  05 June, 2009

There was chaos on the roads at the southern end of the island on Saturday afternoon when a live piece of ordnance was discovered close to the road in Kilmory.

Police were called after a homeowner discovered the corroded piece of ammunition that turned out to be live.

The C147 was closed due to its proximity to the explosives.

Sergeant Bob MacKay said: ‘The Royal Navy bomb disposal unit was called and they travelled across on the 6pm ferry from Ardrossan.

‘They disposed of the ordnance by controlled explosion at 8pm by which time the road had been closed for four hours.’

At the same time, the road was blocked for two hours close to Auchenreoch Farm after a lorry broke down.
