Whiting Bay children adopt a beach
Published:  14 November, 2008

The children of Whiting Bay Primary School have adopted a beach.

Last Friday afternoon, in pouring rain, a group of senior pupils were out on the beach in front of the school picking up rubbish under the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) Adopt-a-Beach scheme.

They were rained off eventually but not before collecting a variety of litter and debris with the aid of litter pickers and black bags supplied by North Ayrshire Council. Teachers and classroom assistants had lists from the MCS to record the type and amount of litter collected.

Practise

Head teacher Annette Treble said: ‘This was just a practise run. We’ll hold another proper beach clean in January and try to get the adult residents involved.’

An MCS spokesman said: ‘The Adopt-a-Beach programme is for anyone who enjoys going to the beach and wants to do something to improve the environment and help sea life.

‘The main sources of litter are beach visitors, sewage outfalls, fishing debris and shipping.’
