Arran’s senior rugby team are preparing for what could be one of their toughest games yet as they take on Millbrae RFC this Saturday.
The experienced team from Ayr left Arran bruised and bloodied last October when the two teams clashed in the national cup competition.
Millbrae have played in division two of the west regional league for a number of years and are second in the league.
On Saturday the Ayr team played Hughenden and defeated them with a mighty 88 points to 10. But are the Arran team worried? Coach Bert Ramage said no. ‘We will treat this game just like any other,’ he said. ‘We know this team because we’ve come up against them before. It will definitely be a physical game and it will be tough but it doesn’t worry me.’
Bert said that playing against teams like Millbrae is crucial to the team’s development. ‘We need games against teams like this to help the boys get more experience of how to play in the higher divisions,’ he said. ‘Every game will be hard but we can win when we put our minds to it.’
Team captain Murray Picken shares that sentiment. ‘It will be a hard game because they finished just behind Paisley last year and they defeated us in the cup game,’ said Murray. ‘But we have to believe that we can win.’
The game kicks off at 3pm at the Ormidale Park in Brodick on Saturday afternoon so please come along and support the team.
Meanwhile, on Sunday afternoon, Arran’s junior rugby team will be playing Cumnock RFC in Brodick. This will be the young team’s first ever home again and will kick off at 2pm. Once again please come along and support the team.
