Arran’s achievement in gaining Fairtrade Island status was celebrated at a special event in the Burnside Gallery in Brodick on Tuesday night.

The evening was organised by the Fairtrade Arran committee to thank the people of Arran who helped to achieve the designation as a Fairtrade island in early July. Committee member Keith Robertson said: ‘It is so important to support the Fairtrade movement. It is fantastic that so many businesses on Arran have helped us to achieve this.’

The purpose of the evening was to show just what a wide variety of Fairtrade items can be bought on the island.

Graham Tinto, another committee member proudly showed visitors the official certificate proclaiming Arran’s new status.

Arran is one of only six Scottish Fairtrade islands, the others being Shetland, Fair Isle, Westray, Papa Westray and Iona.

In all there are now 52 premises on the island where Fairtrade produce can either be obtained or where it is in use.
