Northend Thistle won their first game of football in more than 14 years on Saturday but much to the dismay of their fans the victory does not count, as the game was a friendly.
Taking on a re-formed Southend United team at the Hay Field in Lochranza, this is the first time Northend have beaten an Arran side in a long time.
Twenty years ago Southend United could have claimed Northend’s present day title of Britain’s worst football team. The team from the southern end of Arran regularly lost games by 20 goals.
Eddie ‘Straw Top’ Picken, Davie Thomas, Dennis Smith, Stuart Gough and Tony Brookes joined present day Southend players and managed to lose by only one goal.
