Féis Arainn a resounding success
Published:  15 August, 2008

Youngsters on Arran showed real promise as budding musical stars after they took part in the annual Féis Arainn.

The Féis was a resounding success once again this year as children flocked to the High School in Lamlash to learn how to play a variety of traditional Scottish instruments including the accordion, fiddle, clarsach and even guitars and drums.

Part of a nationwide body, Fèisean nan Gaidheal, the objective of the event is to further the Gaelic language and culture among young people.

It has been the starting point of many of Scotland’s young musical stars including local girl Gillian Frame who attended the first Fèis Arainn in 1993 and went on to form her own band Back of the Moon.

Tutors this year included well-known fiddler Fiona MacAskill, famous accordionist Gary Innes and singer Darren MacLean.

Aileen McLaughlin the Féis organiser said: ‘Al, Cathie, Sandie, Shona and myself would like to say taing mhor to everyone who contributed to the success of Féis Arainn last week.

‘The tutors are always the key people in giving the participants a good experience in learning and appreciating the Gaelic language and traditional culture and the talent and professionalism of this year’s tutors ensured this once again.’ Aileen said that thanks were also due to North Ayrshire Council, Féisean nan Gaidheal and the Scottish Arts Council for their greatly appreciated financial support.

‘Thank you also to all the local volunteers and businesses who helped to make the event such a success, said Aileen. ‘Finally mòran taing to all the children for their hard work and infectious enthusiasm which produced such a great concert on Friday night and to their parents and families for their cooperation and support. Cun an ath thuras – ‘til next time.’
