A 15-year-old Arran girl could be the second local to play for the Scottish Rugby women’s team if trials at Murrayfield are successful.
Shauna Jameson from Lamlash travelled to Murrayfield Stadium with the Isle of Arran Rugby team in May to play in the National Sevens Tournament where she played some outstanding rugby.
She said: ‘While I was there I was spotted by a Scottish Rugby Union coach who asked me to go to the girls under 16s Scotland trials.’ Since then she has been to a number of training sessions and trials in both Edinburgh and Perth.
If Shauna is successful then she will be the second Arran girl to be selected to play for Scotland in five years.
South Africa tour
Lindsay Wheeler from Corrie played her first game for the national team in 2003 and since then has won 25 caps for Scotland. She was recently selected to play for the Nomads, an invitation team, who are leaving to tour South Africa. ‘The Nomads are sort of like a female version of the Barbarians team,’ said Lindsay.
Lindsay, aged 24, will travel to South Africa this week and while there will spend 11 days touring the region.
The Nomads will play two tests against South Africa as the curtain openers for the men’s South Africa versus Argentina game and then the tri-nations match, South Africa against New Zealand.
Lindsay said: ‘I’ve had so many great experiences with the Scotland team and it’s fantastic for me to see another Arran girl perhaps being given the same chance.’
Lindsay was one of the founding members of the Arran ladies team.
Shauna is the third generation of her family to play the sport. Both her grandfather and dad Paul played for Arran too.
