Demolition work will start on the Douglas Hotel in Brodick next Monday July 21.

The hotel was purchased by St Petersburg-based property developer Sean Henry last year and plans were passed for a luxury 14-bedroom hotel on the site retaining only the front red sandstone façade.

Architect David McMillan said: ‘We will begin with the limited removal of plaster and lathe from the ceilings and walls. Access may be restricted across the hotel grounds. We are pleased to have appointed local contractor John Thomson Construction Ltd to carry out this initial work.’

Project manager Ivan Rogers said: ‘We will be putting a protective fence around the building to enable chutes and skips to be used safely. This initial work should take seven weeks. The contractor will keep the site as tidy as possible.

‘We will be installing a temporary hammerhead by Jimmy the Barber’s to enable vehicles to turn round. All the contractors lorries will go in and out of the site by the main entrance near the pier.’

Demolition is expected to take three months and main building contractors have not yet been appointed
