Residents in Kildonan are ‘extremely concerned’ about a proposed development at the Breadalbane Hotel site, which will see nine houses and nine flats being built there.
Willie McNeish, a member of the Kildonan Improvements Committee, said that an open meeting has been organised for Monday evening to allow villagers to discuss their objections to the plans.
‘As a community we are extremely concerned about these plans,’ he said. ‘We are appalled by the extent of the development- the occupancy level of the site is far too intrusive and we can’t understand how it will ever be passed.’
Derek Callaghan bought the Breadalbane Hotel more than a year ago and has applied for planning permission to demolish the existing building and erect nine houses and nine flats.
Mr McNeish said that as it is an open meeting, Mr Callaghan is perfectly entitled to attend. ‘We understand that a development will take place of some kind, we can’t stop that, but we want to make sure that what is eventually built there is right for the village.’
The existing property consists of a large building and a field to the front with an access drive to the right hand side.
The plans show that this access will be moved further right to the edge of the site allowing the developer to make full use of the area.
The existing hotel grounds will be used for the 18-unit development that will be built in a courtyard design, which will have parking for 30 cars in the centre.
The two and three-storey buildings are to be finished in off-white render and will have white PVC windows.
Derek Callaghan has confirmed that the site would be used to build both houses and flats, and that if the plans were accepted he planned to sell some of the buildings but hold on to others for rental purposes.
The meeting will take place on Monday night at 7.30pm in Kildonan Village Hall.
