Southend had to work hard for a victory on Saturday evening against Northend.

Northend have yet to win a game but Saturday’s performance showed a marked improvement in the once dreadful team.

Playing at Sandbraes in Whiting Bay gave Southend the home advantage and they soon made a number of great attempts at goal.

But Northend’s replacement goalkeeper, Robert Simpson, kept them at bay.

Ten minutes in a Euan Ingram shot decided beat Robert to give Southend the lead lead.

Northend visibly picked up the pace after this and fought hard to keep the ball. Superb defence from Northend’s Mark Wetton and Matt Milne scuppered a number of attempts from Nicky Emsley to score.

A burst of energy from Southend’s John Stevenson wearing his teams distinctive blue and yellow took the ball almost into the net but once again Robert Simpson stopped it.

However, barely minutes after the first goal Nicky finally found his target and took Southend 2-0 up.

Southend missed a number of free kicks thanks to the Northend defence but the men from Lochranza also succeeded in tripping over each other in their attempts to attack or being foiled by goalkeeper Craig Black.

After half-time Northend stormed into the game once again.

Alec McMullan even resorted to acrobatics at one point to deflect the ball away from Southend.

Despite some fantastic play from Northend — Bryan MacCallum, Ben Tattersfield and Chris de Mendonca in particular — they did not manage to score.

Meanwhile, on Monday night at Ormidale Park, Brodick were beaten 3-1 by a superior Shiskine side.

Two goals from Shiskine’s Fergus Judge and one from Donald ‘Addie’ Adamson sealed the game for them.

Today (Saturday) Northend are at home to Brodick but the Southend v Shiskine match has been rescheduled for later in the week.
